Works For Me Wednesday: Backwards Day!!!
Today is Backwards Day at Works-For-Me Wednesday. Instead of sharing a tip that has worked for you, you'll throw out an issue or question that has stumped you (preferably not something like quantum physics, y'all). Keep it short and keep it specific, and watch (hopefully) the suggestions come flooding through your comments sections.
Question 1: FRIZZY HAIR
My hair has gotten out of control y'all. My favorite anti-frizz spray is no longer being made, and I have tried so many products, and nothing is working. The "serum" products seem to make it worse! I am in desperate need of ideas so I can stop pulling my hair into a ponytail every.single.day! :-)
Question 2: Good cleaner for leather couch
We have had our leather couch for quite some time and it is in desperate need of a good cleaning. We want to replace it, but with three toddlers, I think we should wait a couple more years to get past the primary stain period, and then get a new one that has been bathed in scotchguard. In the meantime, does anyone know of any good, safe products to try or other suggestions?
Don't forget to click MOMMY OF THREE to get the link to my October Pay-It-Forward Book Giveaway, and links to some additional great giveaways! Also, around the 15th I will be giving away THREE copies of Amy Grant's new book Mosiac, and I am planning at least 5 giveaways for the Big Fall Giveaway at the end of the month, so stay tuned! I installed an email subscription button if you are interested:-) Have a great week!

Hi Karen,
For the Frizzy Hair I would take a look at Curly Girl it is a book that I know you can find on Amazon. If you google Curly Girl they also have a website and forum. Hope that helps. Elizabeth
You could try not washing your hair so often. Brush through with a boar bristle brush and condition it every time you shower, but don't wash it with shampoo more than once a week. Also, condition both before and after you shampoo.
Karen, I have seriously curly hair, so I consider myself a professional. I used to buy really expensive smoothing gel, but found that regular brand name stuff works just as well. I use Pantene Curl Defining Scrunching Gel.
Apply to hair when wet and resist the urge to over dry your hair. Let it air dry as much as you're comfortable with. Finger style it and off you go! I've found the more I use the hair dryer, the frizzier my hair gets. I've been told that for years, but until I broke the habit, I never enjoyed my curly hair.
good luck!
I don't know if your hair is naturally straight or curly, but when my straight hair went through a super frizzy phase, I found that using velcro rollers took away the frizz and gave it a soft wave. I used big rollers bc I didn't want curly hair, just non frizzy. No special products required - just hairspray.
(OH and in other good news, this also "re-trained" my hair and I ended up not having to use them every day, even though I do wash my hair every day.)
Hope this helps!
Bed Head Manipulator! Love , love the stuff - but just a tiny bit is all you need.
It's about $15 for a 2 oz. container but it will last you a long time.
HTH,
Mandi
I've used the leather cleaner wipes that you can find at Restoration hardware (more expensive) and target (less expensive) They seem to work well and haven't hurt my leather couches.
When you use the frizz ease serums the key is putting it in your hair when the hair is sopping wet. I turn off the water, squeeze out the excess water from my hair, and then put in a quarter size dollop (I have really thick hair) in my wet hair. Then I use a towel to keep my hair up for about 10 minutes. Then I take off the towel and move on...
I also love my flat iron, which is an ISO. It really helps get rid of the frizz.
I second the use of a flat iron to help tame the frizz. But what also helps is to use a silk or satin pillow case. It won't rub your hair as much at night.
My mom has owned a white leather couch for at least 15 years and it is only recently showing some signs of age. This is in a house with kids and dogs. For quick spot cleaning you can use baby wipes. Deeper cleaning: wipe it down with a wash cloth using warm water and Ivory soap bar. If the leather is starting to look a little dry rub on some leather conditioner or for something less expensive but just as good a Baby Magic Baby Moisturizer (store brands work too).
We have some leather furniture, and I use the Armor All leather wipes (made for leather car interiors) to clean small spots. They work great!
When I was growing my hair out to about chin length bob it went frizzy. I tried serums and always felt weighed down. I gave up on the bob and just had it cut shorter. No more frizz.
If you have curly hair stop using the anti-frizz serums immediately! It only dries your hair out and creates more frizzies in the longterm.
Pick up Lorraine Massey's "Curly Girl" book and follow her regimen, it's amazing!
If you're not a curly girl then sorry I have nothing for you :(
BEST FRIZZ CONTROL EVER!!! Biosilk! You can purchase this "serum" at Target or Sam's (Sam's is FAR cheaper!). I have super curly hair and my best friend has straaaaaight hair. We both use it and LOVE it. You can apply it to wet hair before styling or rub it through after it is dry. It smells great, isn't sticky and works like a dream! It's a little expensive, but a big bottle will last me 6+ months!
I also have curly hair and know exactly what you mean. I blogged about the best curly hair product I have ever found here http://monica-shineagain.blogspot.com/2007/08/curly-hair-woes-no-more.html. Check it out!!
Sorry. I don't think I did that right. It's in the August Archives of my blog.
Hope it helps.
One of our cats just left us a "surprise" on our leather couch. We read that windex was good for getting out stains and odours and you know what? It worked! Try the windex, it worked for me!
I have curly hair that gets really frizzy. I was using Sunsilk de-frizz shampoo, conditioner, and 24/7 creme, which worked pretty well, but anything that is not natural makes me breakout, so I stopped using it.
Now I only shampoo my hair every three or four days, which allows the natural oils to build up and keep the hair smooth. (I only wet it on the other days.) I also use Nature's Gate Organics "Hold That Pose" hair gel, which gives a smooth finish without the crunchy feel of most gels. I put a small amount on wet hair and let it air dry.
I'm not sure if this makes a difference, but my shampoo and conditioner are Nature's Gate, too. I use it because of the breakouts, but I think natural products are better because they do not strip away the oils as much.
Good luck!
My hair gets very frizzy too. I wash it only every other day (just wet it down on the 'off' days). When I style it, I spray some of the Paul Mitchell Freeze-n-Shine spray on it - I love it because it doesn't make my hair stiff or sticky and it doesn't leave a residue when I wash my hair. And it really helps a lot with the frizz! :)
i must second (third or fourth, actually) the recommendations for the curly girl book.
but also -- i don't wash my hair with soap, instead i rinse out conditioner...i towel dry and then use the heaviest conditioner (usually pantene's heaviest, one of the ones meant to be done once a week and rinsed out) and leave it in...this is awesome for holding down frizzies. then i rinse it out when showering and i'm good to go for the next round. occasionally i use shampoo for buildup but overall my hair is very healthy. good luck!
I came across this older post of your's somehow just now and just had to share my tip for frizzy hair with you.
You are probably going to laugh at this...my tip is: STATIC GUARD all the way!!!
I've been using Static Guard for years and love it, especially in cold weather where frizzies really go wild!
If you look on the can, it actually says on there that it can be used for flyaway hair so I thought I'd try it. You can either spray it directly on your hair or on your brush first.
HTH!!
